Ever wondered how people tag their friends in a Status Update on Facebook?

Tag-a-friend

For example, I tagged Natasha in the above post.  It’s really simple!  Here’s how:

Step 1: When you are typing your Status Update (it won’t work in a comment), place the cursor at the position in the sentence where you want to add the person’s name.

Step 2: Type an @ symbol

Step 3: Then start typing the firstname of the person you want to insert into the sentence

Step 4: A drop-down menu should automatically appear with a list of your friends with the same firstname.  Select the correct person from the list and the link will appear in your post.

Step 5: Keep typing and finish your sentence, then click “Share”.

Simple!

The status update will appear on your wall, with a clickable link to your friend’s profile. Note: you can’t tag someone who isn’t a friend.  The person you tag will also be informed by Facebook that you tagged them in an update.

But now that you know how to do it, please don’t abuse the tagging feature!  Tagging in this way is great to give someone a compliment or to share something you really think they will be interested in e.g. something you have both been working on.  Don’t use the tagging feature just to get someone’s attention, especially if they are a new friend or you haven’t developed the relationship very far, or it will look like you are spamming them.
