Turning Off Instant Personalization on Facebook

There are currently a lot of messages and status updates flying around about a new Privacy setting on Facebook called Instant Personalization, claiming that it will be turned on” today”. These messages appear say something like “Facebook’s ‘instant personalization’ feature is to be switched on today, allowing the walls between the social network and the world to be broken through for a seamless experience for all.”

This feature was actually enabled back in Spring 2010 and just as your News Feed on Facebook is uniquely for you, instant personalization enables select partners, such as Pandora and Rotten Tomatoes, to create social experiences tailored for you.

If you haven’t already disabled Instant Personalization (if you choose to do so), here are the instructions:

Step 1. When you are logged into Facebook, click Account in the top right corner and select Privacy Settings from the drop down menu.

Step 2. Scroll down to the bottom left of the page and under the heading “Apps and websites” select “Edit your settings”.

Step 3. Look for the section “Instant personalization” and click ” Edit settings”. If you see a popup called “Understanding instant personalization” just click on the Close button.

Step 4. At the very bottom of the Instant Personalization page, simply uncheck the box labeled “Enable instant personalization on partner websites”. This will turn off access to your data by any partner websites.
